Adding a new tier to the company profile, Sandman proudly opens its first central city location – Sandman Hotel Vancouver. A modern, fully-equipped high rise, this hotel sets the foundation for the company’s successful foray into higher end hotel accommodations.
Sandman also expands its presence to Alberta with the 150-unit Sandman Hotel West Edmonton while adding another BC property to their roster with the Sandman Inn Revelstoke.

Sandman opens its largest city centre hotel with the Sandman Hotel Downtown Calgary. With 301-rooms, this high rise offers convenience in the heart of the city. A second tower opens alongside the hotel for commercial leasing purposes. It comprises 270,000 square feet of leasable space.

Northland enters their hotels, restaurants, and properties into emerging markets. The first standalone Denny’s location opens in Vancouver’s popular West End neighbourhood and gains popularity quickly. The Sandman Inn Kamloops expands with the addition of 32-suite units and 55-residential apartment units.
1996, The standalone Denny’s concept is a hit
The standalone Denny’s concept is a hit, ushering a new wave of restaurants in Western Canada. Four new Denny’s locations open: 3 in the Edmonton area – Sherwood Park, Gateway Boulevard, and 25th avenue – and one in downtown Calgary.
1997, With an exciting decade of additions
With an exciting decade of additions, Northland continues to grow rapidly. Not only does a new 146-room Sandman Hotel open in Langley with a 181-seat Denny’s, but Northland’s restaurant brands expand with the Shark Club Bar & Grill.
The success of Denny’s ushers in 2 new restaurants in North Kamloops and downtown Edmonton.
Continuing to innovate and cater to the needs of their growing customer base, Sandman Hotel Williams Lake adds a new building comprising of 31-residential apartments and 31 additional hotel suites.
1998, Northland acquires the rights on Moxie’s
With foresight into the potential of Canada’s food & hospitality market, Northland acquires the rights to the Moxie’s chain of 24 company-owned and franchised restaurants. The decision is an immediate success with the first new concept Moxie’s Classic Grill opening to rave reviews in the Shawnessy area of Calgary. The first franchised Moxie’s location under Northland ownership opens at the Bayshore Shopping Centre in Ottawa.
Throughout BC and Alberta, both Denny’s and Sandman continue to develop and gain recognition. Sandman Hotel Grande Prairie opens with an on-site Denny’s and a standalone Denny’s opens in Crowfoot, Calgary.
Property development expands across the two provinces rapidly with the first free standing apartment building, the Northland Apartments Grande Prairie, and the Northland Apartments building in North Kamloops. The Sandman Inn Prince George opens additional 74-suites.
1999, The Sandman Hotel Victoria opens with 100 units
The Sandman Hotel Victoria opens with 100 units as well as the Sandman Hotel Vancouver Airport with 172-rooms.
The Moxie’s Classic Grill in Chinook Centre, Calgary reopens after extensive renovations to the new concept. The first Moxie’s within a Sandman Hotel opens in Richmond, BC. Kingston, ON also saw the opening of a franchised Moxie’s. In Quesnel, the first Denny’s diner opened seating 98 people and the Williams Lake Shark Club opened.
2000, Two new Shark Clubs open in Victoria and Saskatoon
Sandman Hotels open in Saskatoon, Quesnel, and Red Deer. Sandman Hotel Vancouver undergoes a major renovation with the addition of a new 87-room tower. Sandman Suites in Vernon opens comprising of 19-apartment units and 27-suite rooms.
The restaurant division of the company experiences major expansions. Denny’s restaurants open in both Calgary and Saskatoon. Moxie’s creates its own distinctive lounge called Mbar and opens its first one in downtown Calgary as well as two Moxie’s franchised locations in Windsor, Ontario, and on Calgary Trail in Edmonton.
